Hello everyone. Today I purchased a beautiful little winter white/Campbell dwarf hybrid baby from a pet store. She was housed with males but an employee said she cannot be pregnant because she is a hybrid? Is that true? Thank you!

Hello and welcome to the forum. Your hamster is very cute. :)

All dwarf hamsters in pet shops are hybrids because a pure winter white or cambell is rare and usually only available from a specialised breeder and they can indeed be pregnant by being kept with male hamsters. Very odd for the person to suggest otherwise but sadly people who work in pet shops are often uneducated about animals.

Did you get her cage and accessories from the pet shop because it is likely they recommended the wrong things. If you wish to you can post a picture of the cage for some tips. It can be trickly to get a set up right for the first time.

Thank you for your response. I have had Syrians before so I know the proper set up (she’s in a spacious cage now but I ordered a pawhut cage measuring over 1000 square inches that’ll be here Friday for her). She’s just my first dwarf 🩷

A Pawhut will be lovely for her. What is her name? I also have my first dwarf hamster. :)

This is her temp cage

She definitely could be pregnant unfortunately. The gestation period is up to 3 weeks.

It's great to hear you have a Pawhut on the way for her. It will be an amazing enclosure for her! I would personally be inclined to keep her in the cage she's in now for the first 3 weeks just in case she is pregnant. Moving to a new cage is an upheaval which wouldn't be ideal if she's pregnant. As long as her current cage isn't really tiny and is safe (not too tall or with lots of levels).

Make sure she has a spacious house which gets very dark inside so she feels safe. You could also feed her some extra protein like egg, chicken, beef or even fish, as well as healthy fatty seeds like hemp seeds, flax seeds and pumpkin seeds.

Fingers crossed she isn't pregnant, but it is a possibility. If she gives birth you may not notice for a few days as they tend to hide their pups well. Try not to disturb her cage too much, and if you do spot any pups, don't touch them until their eyes are open.

Congratulations on the new hamster :)

Hello and welcome :) She is absolutely gorgeous. If hybrids couldn't get pregnant there'd be no hybrid dwarf hamsters lol. Is there anything that makes you think she might be pregnant, by the way she looks? Or just that she was in with male hamsters. And yes there is a chance she could be pregnant if she was in with male hamsters - unless the pet shop meant she was in with a different species of male hamster! Which would be really bad practice by the pet shop but wouldn't surprise me! eg if she was in with Syrian male hamsters. But I'm guessing they meant male dwarf hamsters. IT sounds like the pet shop were either confused or making excuses.

The gestation period is 18 to 22 days so she'll need to be on pregnancy watch as Daisy mentioned. The Prevue cage she is in is not a bad size at all but I'd put some cardboard round the inside bars so you can have deeper bedding, particularly as it's quite a tall cage for a dwarf hamster so it helps avoid injuries from falls if the bedding is deeper (and it effectively reduces the height). I have a dwarf hamster who does climb to the roof and hang from the roof sometimes!

Hello & welcome to the forum.
Your ham is gorgeous.
Hope she isn’t pregnant but at least you can be prepared now just in case.
