The scent of a female can drive the boys crazy. I've had that experience with Rory and a foster hamster. And more recently with Clive and my jumper.

Clive got up at the normal time of 18.30/19.00 and has been out twice. He's been on wheels, had a good rummage in the playbin and came back to me with full pouches. He's in his house now and closed his door. I cleaned his house out because he had run out of space for himself and it was getting a bit miffy so he's stocking up again. He wasn't put out by me removing old bedding and hoard (replaced with new) and left him some treats which he took straight to his house.

I've watched Eddie hamstering about but he didn't want to come out and no sign of Lilly or the Robos.

It's so quiet here and i'm not used to it. It was too busy at freeroaming time when i had four Syrians but i managed somehow. Having only one is weird.
I don't really know what to say Beryl apart from I'm thinking of you and your hamster family 🐹💕

I can understand how quiet and odd it must feel. With Syrians they are so likely to want to come out but it seems with dwarfs you can never really be sure if they feel like coming out.

Dwarfs are often daytime or morning hamsters. I suppose i have to get used to the fact that i can have an early night if i want to which is also weird.

It must all feel very strange, perhaps the others are sensing it too and just feeling a bit quiet tonight. Nice to hear Eddie has been up and about in his enclosure and that Clive has been out twice hamstering around and is enjoying his larder restock. I’ve no doubt Lilly will be up in the morning and up to her usual funny antics.

Clive's behaviour has definitely changed since Jack has died. He sleeps more and he's not as keen to come out as he used to be when Jack was alive. I'm not sure if that is a good or a bad thing. When he is out he'll do some foraging and then comes back to me to go back home. I'm not sure if i'm transferring my own feelings of loss onto Clive or does he really miss Jack.

Clive is about 1.5 now so i hope that he's not starting to show signs of aging already.

I am planning to get another male Syrian but that can take a while. Jack's cage is too small to adopt from a rescue as they require a 100cmx50cm minimum for a Syrian so it's a matter of checking the small ads.

Im sorry Beryl. It is difficult to know if Clive is missing Jack.

I am sure a male Syrian will be on the small ads soon. I have seen a few in London but mainly females.

I wasn't going to get another one but it only takes a sad face in a Spelos to change my mind. Not that i've even seen one but i know what i'm like so thought that i just as well clean and set up Jack's cage. My OH didn't even entertain the idea of not getting another Syrian. He's down to one porridge at the moment and keeps looking into Jack's cage. The empty but ready cage is less unsettling than an empty space.

I can understand that. It is so nice your OH loves hamsters too.

They often are sensitive to the loss of a hamster, probably not in the way we are but they do know they’ve gone & take a while to adjust. Clive sounds content though so I wouldn’t be too concerned about his change in behaviour.
Looking at a newly set up cage does help I know, I’ve done that myself even though I may not have been planning on getting another that soon the space just feels more positive.

Just a thought. Your local P@H might have a male Syrian up for adoption. I went into my local P@H the other day and they had 3 Syrian males in the adoption centre. All unwanted Christmas presents. Very sad.

That is very sad and i'll have a look at the weekend, thanks.

I've seen two in the small ads but the one i want is reserved so i'm hoping that the adoption will fall through. He's a short haired middle aged boy living in a p@h cage.

The other is a long haired pedigree young boy in a Duna Multy type cage. I'm surprised the breeder didn't advise on appropriate cage sizes for a Syrian.

Beryl I do hope you get a long haired young boy! You've had a few losses recently.

I feel that the Alaska would be too small for a pedigree hamster and i don't have the space to upgrade to another Plaza.

I made the owner aware that a pedigree Syrian can grow quite large and needs a 100cmx50cm cage and she's now advertising her hamster and his cage separately.

It is great you tried to educate them and they listened too.

Hmm. Clive's fur is thinning again and his health is starting to decline even though he's only 17/18 months old. He's drinking more and not quite as active as he used to be.

I'm not surprised though because he's had issues with his fur for a while and has been seen by the vet.

It could be part of the natural aging process of course which still takes me by surprise because their lives are so short. Clive must be nearing 60 in human years.

So sorry to hear about Clive’s fur is thinning again. It does seem a bit young for that. Although technically they are considered as older from 18 months onwards. Are you sure about his age? I think as long as he keeps throwing things, he is hamstering along :) But it is a worry if he seems to be declining. I hope he picks up.

His fur thinned at less than a year old but no, i'm not sure of his age. I'm going by what i was told by the not very nice to him family i bought him from.
He's been quieter since Jack died and doesn't run on the wheels like he used to. I still think that another hamster's scent or the lack of it has something to do with that.

Yes he could be pining a bit maybe? Maybe he needs a slight change or something? Different room maybe?

I was wondering about a change but can't move him into a different room.

I could change his set up but not sure that would be a good idea either. Or clean his cage to re focus his mind. He used the burrowing area the first few months but hasn't burrowed in months. Maybe i'll do a half cage clean on that side and add a couple of new things.
