A new family member has joined the household. A lovely little pale grey dwarf hamster, I guess part campbells and half winter white. I have been preparing for her for sometime and at last she is with me.

She had a really good exploration of the cage and tried out her nightangel wheel, even sitting on it to have a wash xxx

She climbed up onto her house (brought with her by her foster mum) using the bars. She then explored her blue shelf which houses a bendy bridge, a lovely ceramic hide from her foster home, her water bowl and her food dishes. She ate some food and had a wash.

I put my hand slowly into the cage, from the top (she is used to a top access tank) and she had a little sniff but didn't take the proffered meal worm.

She explored for ages. Went into her bed and came out and explored some more.

I am overjoyed.

Wonderful :-) She looks so happy exploring and she seems to be looking up at you the odd time - so sweet. And she looks tiny in her wheel.

I am amazed at how confident she seems. She was all slow and cautious at first but soon relaxed and pottered about her new home. The wonderful foster mum was very pleased and told Cindy that she had found her forever home, which she certainly has.

Oh God oh God oh God this morning Cindy came out for a drink of water so I went over to the cage and chatted to her. She came towards me so I put my hand in with a few yummy mealworms, in fact with some rodipet mix. She walked straight onto my hand and started munching away. She sniffed my hand as well then settled back for more munching.

I am utterly utterly enchanted by this sweet solid little hamster.

A big thank you to her wonderful foster mum for working with her to get her to this level of familiarity with people.

So happy for you Tulsi 😊. It’s wonderful when they are tame like that - it may partly be her personality as well - but really lovely thing for you to have this experience straight away 😊

She came out last night around 9pm. I put my hand in next to her and she kind of touched her paws onto it a few times and raced about for a while then sat next to my hand and washed very thoroughly. She was so close to my hand that I could feel the movements of her body as she washed xxx

She had a good look around her cage and then, rolled numerous times in her sand area and finally went and sat in her wheel just relaxing for over ten minutes!!!

I hope she comes out again when the light is still on.

Kulfi would come out as soon as the lights went on, except for his first few days when he would appear any time in the evening, light on or not.

That sounds great :-) It might be an idea to keep up the handling so it doesn't regress but it sounds like she is fairly tame and just adjusting :-) ie keep offering your hand to be sat on. Maybe with some food or a treat on as added temptation! It sounds like she loves her cage.

Totally agree. I did have food on my hand I think that she was just in whizz mode, maybe nerves maybe exploration excitement. But yes I fully intend to keep up the handling with food.

The bliss of her little feets on my hand in so rewarding!
