Hello everyone, want to introduce myself and my recently adopted hamster, Chubs.
He’s a Syrian of unknown age. Previous owner never interacted with him much and kept him in a small pet store starter kit.

I upgraded him into a pawhut wooden cage, it’s the same one I’ve seen in this forum. He’s got roughly 10” of bedding, sandbath, different substrates and a 11” wheel plus some chew toys but he does not seem very interested in the toys yet. But runs between 3.5km to 5km a night tracked with the niteangel tracker.

I have noticed what appears to be sounds of him chewing the cage but can’t see what he’s up to since he’s below all the bedding and where he has made his tunnels. I have a Wyze V3 cam setup but that’s only surface level.

Photo of the little guy is when I picked up him, and cage photos are during set up. A few more hideo

Any suggestions on what to do without stressing him out to much?

Thank you!

Hi. Sorry I didn’t reply before and I’m sure others will be along soon 😊. It’s quite late st night in the Uk where I am!

Chubs looks like a lovely hamster and he’s so lucky you’ve given him a lovely home.

There have been quite a few cases of hamsters chewing their way out of pawhuts so I would check the corners and maybe the base to see if he’s chewed any holes. That might mean feeling around in the bedding a bit!

Some people actually tile the base of them because apparently the wood on the base is quite thin and the corners are also places they can chew. If you can find out where he’s chewing you may be able to prevent an escape hole!

I hope he isn’t chewing his way out because it would be such a pain for you and some disturbance for him - but better than having him escape, It can be quite an issue with that cage. Some hansters chew it and some don’t.

Hello and welcome to the forum! Chubs is very cute. Your set up is super, lots for him to do and experience, it must be wonderful for him to have a big cage with nice deep bedding and an owner who interacts with him. I hope you can find what he is doing and that it turns out OK ❤️

That was tile not file! Sorry for all the typos - I've corrected them now. I give up trying to type on a phone!
