Hello everyone!

I just got my new buddy about three days ago. I don't know whether Chubbs is male or female yet but I just say him for now. I don't know much about him. The people I got him from said he was under a year and a long haired Syrian. He's a cool little dude. Friendly and busy. He came with his 60 gallon tank and some accessories. I just went out yesterday and got him a huge wheel as his old one was around 5 inches and looked about big enough for a mouse! He hopped on his new wheel right away! So happy! I got him some whimzie treats and some reptile zoo sand which he has already started to use as his toilet so that's a nice easy way to clean. He loves black beans. But he also will enjoy a blueberry, broccoli, apple, and of course carrot. Next paycheque, I'm going to add some height to his cage. I'd love in the future to split the cage from the bedding for half and then substrate (coco dirt) for the second half. I think he would really enjoy that. He's not too much into burrowing yet but I think that's only because he had just 2 inches or so of bedding in his cage with his prior owners. I added a ton more so he's kind of getting the hang of it. I'll see if I can add some photos!

Hello and welcome to the forum. It’s a very friendly place and full of good information.

Chubbs is a beautiful looking boy with that gorgeous coat. He seems very friendly and you have a lovely sounding set up for him. Look forward to hearing and seeing more as he settles in with you.

Hello and welcome! He is gorgeous. So glad you got him a new wheel and more bedding - he’ll love that :)

Lovely he is so friendly as well. What are the dimensions of the 60 gallon tank? I think they’re about 4 foot long but some are quite narrow. The depth is quite important as well :)

This one definitely has depth! I wish that it was a bit longer but later on, I'm going to look for one with more length as well and I can add more exciting things for him. His previous owner had messaged me before I picked him up that the tank was actually 60 gallon because they had it listed as 40 gallon- it doesn't look like 60galloms to me. But to be honest, I think I'm going to look for one that's longer and has a bigger footprint anyhow. Then I can add different beddings etc etc. I'll have to grab my tape measure the next time I'm at the garage and see the actual dimensions. This one has good depth at least at I would guess about 14-16 inches. There are always aquariums second hand, it's just the matter of finding the right shape lol

It sounds fine for now :). 16” deep isn’t too bad (about 40cm) but a bit deeper would be better :). 45 to 50cm. But he’ll be settling in and it sounds fine for now. If you decide to save for a new one, look out for dollar per gallon sales at petco. 75 gallon is a good size (about 40” x 20” or 100cm x 50cm). Or you might find one second hand:)
He is so gorgeous and fluffy!

Sorry - typo! That should say 100cm x 50cm - not 200! I’ll edit it :-)

Thank you! I'm in Canada so we have PetSmart and Petland here and I haven't seen any sort of sales like that yet. I will keep an eye out though. There is one of those ikea Detolf I think it's called, on the buy and sell but they want $200 which I can't afford just yet and I think I would prefer a tank instead as they seem sturdier. Heavy, but sturdy lol I will keep searching the buy and sell for the right tank in the meantime. There are alot of bridges and hides on the buy and sell too for cheap so I have lots of options!

$200 does seem a lot for a detolf! We used to be able to pick them up for about £15 second hand. Ikea don't sell them any more so maybe that has bumped the second hand price up. Yes a tank would probably be sturdier and less expensive than something like the Niteangel cages. If you're up for a bit of diy there are various Ikea Hacks that are quite easy, like the Platsa :) I say easy - I'm not great at diy ha ha. I think the platsa just needs a lid making. But it sounds like there's no big rush as the tank he's in isn't exactly small.

I have heard of the platsa! I will also give that a look! Thank you!

It's a cheap option if you can make a lid :)

Btw he looks like a boy to me and has a lovely long skirt! Although without seeing a close up of his backside and underside it's hard to tell!

I have these two photos but I'm not sure how helpful they will be!

Still hard to tell ha ha. But from the first one he looks like a boy to me :) And his face looks like a boy. It's always harder to see things when they're long haired! He should have a more elongated back end where his testicles are, whereas a female would have a more rounded back end. If he's a he, then when he's warm and relaxed, his testicles might pop out and that would make things clearer!

Black beans are ok in moderation :-) As an occasional treat. Sounds like he loves his fruit and veg as well!
