After Maz linked to bone broth in Tosans thread I thought I’d have a look & see what we have here in the UK, most of them are liquid & don’t keep for long although you can freeze them but I did find this powder one.
Chicken bone broth powder
It is very expensive but will last ages for a ham, I decided to try some with Zak as he loves chicken & I though it might give him a bit of a boost.
I did try mixing it with a tiny bit of water to see if I could make an eatable paste but it just goes completely liquid, that might still be useful if a. ham was sick or old & not really eating much but then they shouldn’t have too much liquid.
I’ve mixed it with a couple of different veggie baby foods & it works well, doesn’t really change the consistency much at all just thickens it very slightly, every last bit has been licked off the plate so that was a success!

Anyway I thought I’d just link it here for anyone in future who might be struggling to feed a sick or elderly hamster.

That is a great find! And it's prebiotic too. I'm wondering if it might work for disguising baytril as well. Drawn into a syringe with it eg. If it's a powder you make up, is there a use by date from when the bag is opened? It's good if it lasts a long time and can just be used when needed.

I only came across the other one by chance. I'll maybe add that one on here too so there's a resource for any other similar ones :)

This is the one I linked on Tosan's thread. It's liquid so more for a one off emergency usage possibly (without seeing how long it keeps if opened - maybe 2 or 3 days in the fridge? But these things usually have long use by dates on before they're opened - it looks like a long life carton. I only looked at a liquid one due to Tosan's hamsters needing liquids and thought the flavour may encourage taking liquids. But the powdered one also makes into a liquid so same idea :)

I wondered about it being good for disguising meds too, I’m not about to taste it but it does smell very meaty so it might well work.

I can’t see anything about how long it keeps after opening, just says store in cool dry place, best before date on mine is Oct. 26 so long shelf life.

Chicken bone broth used to be an old fashioned build me up for sick people in my Grandmother's time! The boiled bones have a lot of nutrients.

That's good. I like the idea of a powdered one you can make up.

I wonder if the liquid broths could be frozen in ice cube trays? I hadn't thought to use broth before. It could be even be soaked into pellets such as Science Selective.

The liquid ones I looked at can be frozen.
It does seem very versatile so soaking pellets should be fine. The powder one can just be sprinkled over food too.

Good idea Rainbow. Just read the description again "Once opened our broth will keep for 5 days in the fridge and will turn to a thick consistency. Also suitable for home freezing into portions."

So yes it can be frozen. Presumably it goes thin again when heated.
