Albert is russian dwarf hamster. He's about 6 months old and I adopted him from the p@h adoption centre last month. Albert was originally named James. The staff at p@h gave him that name. We've no idea what his name was before that. I decided new start new name. Albert came into the p@h adoption centre in a bad way. He was bold and had lots of wounds. The staff have no idea how Albert became to be in such a mess. Albert was under the care of the onsite vet who proscribed antibiotics and he lived at p@h for about 3 to 4 months in the back of the store away from the public. I got to know about Albert by telephoning the store to see if they had any hamsters up for adoption. They told me about Albert but said I couldn't have him until he got the full all clear from the vet. I had no idea what Albert looked like until the day I picked him up and it was love at first sight 🐹😍

It is really interesting to hear Alberts story. It was a very lucky day for him when you found him.

Poor Albert had such a bad start in life.

He is very lucky dwarfie to live with you now and enjoy the live he deserves.

My dwarf Eddie is also from a p@h adoption tank and so is my Robo Finley.

Looking forward to hear more about Albert.

They always have lots of animals up for adoption at p@h.

Is your robo Finley hand tamed? I've read robos are for looking at and can't be tamed.

Finley doesn't like humans and prefers his own company. He refuses to leave his tank and squeaks loudly when i take him out for a health check. He used to be a child's pet.

My other Robo climbs onto my hand to get his linseeds and sometimes runs around in the hall free roaming area.

Robos are generally shy and more for watching but not all of them. Like with all species, a lot depends on their personality.

I don't think robos are for me then. I love cuddles. Albert loves a cuddle too.

Albert is so lucky to have you! Very sad he had wounds. He looks happy and healthy now on your photo. I have a Robo and a Syrian at the moment. Robos are definitely not for cuddling. They are wonderful to watch and I find you can have quite a special verbal interaction with them - they are quite communicative in terms of looks and body language and will sit and listen and demonstrate things they want sorting out! This is our second robo and the first was very much the same that way. However they are very hard to tame. It is possible to tame a robo to the point they will sit on you, but not many people achieve that.

I read an article by a robo breeder who reckons that if you DO get a robo hand tamed, they are actually more sociable and comfortable with you than any other species of hamster. But I think that must take a lot of dedicated work to achieve.

As a species they are the most frightened of all the species - being so tiny. Which is also why they are so incredibly fast! It's their speed that puts a lot of people off.

Syrians are generally known as more cuddly and easy to handle, but it depends on their personality - some are - some don't like being handled - but I do find them generally easy to hand tame and handle. I've had a lazy one who was very bonded with me and would go to sleep on my knee and sit for long cuddles and strokes. I've had a shy one who didn't like being handled. And I've had a couple of maverick ones who are highly active - but will tolerate being handled for short times.

Our current syrian was also a child's pet before going to a rescue and he hated hands - he was a biter. I suspected he'd had some traumas with rough handling. It took months to hand tame him, wearing gloves initially.

I have never had a Russian dwarf - some people find them difficult to tame, but most dwarf owners on here sing their praises. So maybe it's just getting to known them. And their personalities and background experiences can shape their behaviour too.

It sounds like Albert recognises he is now in a caring place.

So many people on here have Russian dwarf hamsters it is making me want one! I was always a little bit nervous at their small size for handling, being used to Syrians.

My son took the photo. I was worried Albert might try to chew the lion but he didn't. He just sniffed and then came running back to me for a cuddle 🦁🤗🐹💕

I want to upload a video of Albert but for reason it's not working. How does everyone else do it?

You paste a link so uploading to youtube is what most people do :)
