The Guppy Ladies

Thank you! You can get black guppies. People breed them to compete in shows and the colours are quite amazing. The females have a plainer appearance but may have bright colours on their tail. I prefer shorter tails as they are easier to take care of. The long, trailing tails of show guppies catch easily and damaged tails can lead to fin rot which can weaken or kill the fish. Fin nipping can be a problem for fish whose long tails slow them down and make it harder for them to evade nibbling tank mates.

Here is a quick video of one of the fry with an adult nearby. The tiny fry is trying not to be seen!

Shiny little guppies showing off their pretty tail fins
I couldn't see them at first! Then I watched a bit more and realised they blend in with the stones :-) I caught a glimpse of the baby behind a leaf.

Which tank did you buy? :)
It's a 54 litre Tetra tropical tank from Argos for £80. It has a 59W preset heater, LED light (one piece) and a filter with carbon and other bits and bobs. The reviews do warn that the filter can draw smaller fish into it and kill them, so I might use it for a while and then store it in a small bucket of water. The sponge filter would work well in this tank.

Some filter motors have overheat protection so it's best to keep them in water if they are to be used for cleaning, and it should keep them used to what's in the tank microbiome.

You've done similar things possibly with your tanks. 🐟

They have huge eyes and tiny bodies! They both came out in the middle of the tank and swam around together, so cute. They've gone back into the leaves now!

I would not use the filter at all because if you cycle the tank using it you will only need to start the cycle again when you get the sponge filter. You can buy sponge filters cheaply on Amazon though so do not worry about the price. :)

Ah yes, the tank upgrade merry go round 😄

Hmm, I have three fry, I'm so pleased😊. One of them has a very round tummy, perhaps more recently born? Yes, their main protection at the moment is to try to be fairly inconspicuous. One of the adults has a tiny tear in her tail fin and is driven away by the others when feeding. She manages, as I put very finely crumbled food everywhere, but I need to keep an eye on her. I've given them an extra small feed and they are pooping nicely but don't look too round. I'm hoping to get them a little bit rounder gradually 🍲

Fishy Foo has moved in!
If you are used to fish watching, you might be able to see him resting on an Anubia plant, fast asleep 😴

The flow is strong, but he seems to like it and often surfs in it, but less often now that his fins are a bit heavier. When he was glass surfing all day long unless I covered the tank so that it was very dark and he went to sleep, and not eating, one of the pieces of advice I got was to switch up the current from the filter outflow. This gave him something to work against, and helped, but what really made a difference was putting frosted film on the back and sides so that he couldn't see a fish reflected in the glass, trying to get into his tank. 🐟

The new filter has done a good job, but I'm just using the old sponge filter for the time being as it's cheaper to run.
If I increase the number of fish one day, I will need the carbon filter.
